Create a field in Microsoft Word - an useful tips

Microsoft Word allows the user to create objects in the application in a number of different ways and fields are no different. The traditional way to create a field in Microsoft Word is to simply goto the Insert menu and then choose field from the drop down menu. However, be aware that this is not the most efficient way to create a field.

The simplest way to create a Field is to use the shortcut keystroke [Ctrl]+[F9]. This creates a default field which then allows you to add the required field codes into the field. For example, if you wanted to create a field that asks the user a question you could use the following steps.

Step 1. Use the shortcut [Ctrl]+[F9] to create the field

Step 2. Type the following in the field code - Fillin "Enter the Customer Name"

Step 3. Use the shortcut [Alt] + [F9] to toggle the field codes

Step 4. Use the shortcut [F9] to activate the field

You should now have a input box on your screen asking you to enter the customer name. If you enter any name and press the OK key, you will see that the field has placed that text on your page.

The Fill-in function in Microsoft Word allows you to ask the user of your Microsoft Word Template questions that when filled in, will be inserted into your document. Using this function simply saves the user time in identifying where pertinent information should go in your document.

If you wish to disconnect the information from a field, so that only the text is now in the document you can simply use the shortcut keystroke [Ctrl] + [Shift] + [F9].
